You may not be able to keep every yellow jacket or wasp away, but you can make your property less attractive to them. Keep outdoor garbage cans tightly sealed, clean up food and drink spills, and avoid leaving pet food or open beverage containers outside. Rinse recycling before placing it in bins, especially cans and bottles that contained sugary drinks.
Inspect your home regularly for gaps around siding, soffits, rooflines, vents, utility openings, and window or door frames. Seal small openings when it is safe to do so, but do not close an active nest inside a wall because the insects may find another route into your home.
Keep shrubs and tree branches trimmed away from the house, remove fallen fruit, and check playsets, sheds, decks, and outdoor furniture for early nest activity. Small nests are easier to address before the colony grows.
