The best way to get rid of wasps outside your home depends on whether they’re nesting nearby or not. A few wasps around flowers, food, trash cans, or recycling is nothing to be alarmed by. A steady stream of wasps flying to the same roofline, deck, wall gap, shrub, shed, or ground hole usually means there is a nest.
Start with the simple stuff. Keep trash lids closed. Rinse cans and bottles before recycling. Clean up food, sugary drinks, and grill grease after eating outside. Pick up fallen fruit, and avoid leaving pet food out on the patio. These steps will not remove an active nest, but they can reduce the chance of wasps building their home near yours.
The bigger issue is the nest itself. Store-bought sprays may work on a small, exposed nest, but they are risky when the nest is high up, underground, or inside a wall, close to kids, pets, and neighbors. Spraying the wrong spot or at the wrong time will likely irritate them, and you may get stung. This can be especially problematic for those who are allergic.
If wasps are showing up in the same place every day, or if you see them entering a part of the home, do not seal the gap or disturb the area. Have it inspected first.
